I have an Alitma sedan, and a pair of Yakima roof crossbars. Going to pick up 3 people at airport 100 miles away, with 4 checked in luggage. I don’t think the luggage would fit in my trunk. Can I tie some of them on the roof bar? Any suggestions?
My car is pretty old. So I don’t care that much about the roof. What should I use? Just ropes? I don’t want the luggage to fall on the high way.

Yes you can. You just might run the risk of damaging your cars roof with the luggage. BK

As long at the roof cross bars are designed for your car, go ahead and use them, or get some that do. I would not suggest just strapping to the roof, as they are very likely to end up on the highway! Get some good straps to secure the luggage, strong rope will do the job just as well too, but do not use parcel string, as it will break to easily. trailblazer
