Can you carry aerosol cans in your luggage on an airplane?
shimi asked:
I was wondering if aerosol cans kept within your luggage are hazardous in the belly of the plane. Does the pressure affect it? I don’t want it to explode inside my luggage.

Yes you can carry aerosols such as hair spray, shaving cream and hair mousse. But not cleaning items like Lysol. There is a weight limit per passenger of aerosols that you can carry in your checked luggage, check the airline website for details. And make sure the cap is firmly attached to the container and to be extra careful put the cans in a large Ziploc bag or durable plastic container. If they leak they won’t actually explode, they will just spray out. Had that happen with shaving cream once. If you shake your cans up and they have pressure it will be more likely to happen with the pressure increasing in the luggage during takeoff. Patti
Please look at the link I have included below.
The TSA website EXPLICITLY says:
Aerosol (any except for personal care or toiletries in limited quantities) are PROHIBITED in both checked baggage and carry-on.
They do not define “limited quantities”, but I would assume that means 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less ONLY.
The problem is that almost every aerosol uses flammable gas as a propellant. If it leaks or discharges for any reason, then you have that flammable gas floating around the cargo hold - which is always a bad idea.
If you put a large can of aerosol hairspray in your checked luggage, it will probably not be there when you get your suitcase back at your destination. Please leave it at home and buy what you need when you arrive. Roger K
