Is it necessary to bring your packed diaper bag to the hospital when you go into labor?

My pregnant sister wants your opinions on this. She is due in a couple of weeks. She has her overnight bag packed and it includes a change of clothes for the baby. She is asking if it is necessary to bring the baby’s diaper bag to the hospital. Did you need your diaper bag before you got home with the baby?

She doesn’t want it to have to sit on the floor and get dirty for 2 days if it’s not necessary to have it while you’re at the hospital. What do you think?

I’m looking at two bags; one is 11″H x 15″W x 6″D, and the other a bit smaller, 9″H x 10¾”W x 4¾”D.
Am I right in thinking that the little one will be fine for quick trips around the neighbourhood, and the larger one okay for longer outings?
What’s in your diaper bag? And what’s essential (er, okay — diapers!), and what’s just nice to have?
