do they allow ice skates in luggage to be taken on planes?
avsgirl4ever asked:
i’ve never flown before, but i’m planning a trip in feb. i’m a hockey player, and i want to take my skates, but i don’t know if they’ll allow me to pack them in my bag that will be put in the luggage compartment. so, do any of you guys have any experiences with that?

I would have to say no because they would be classed as sharp objects.
Hope it helped
Hockey teams fly all the time in a lot of countries, I am sure they bring their skates with them. My nephew just flew internationally last winter to Sweden to play some hockey with his team. I don’t believe they had to buy skates over there, my sister would have freaked and I would have heard about it.
I’d say you can
No they don’t as they’re a sharp item “that could be used as a weapon” (my mum had a swiss army knife confiscated at customs for the same reason) in fact I’d recommend checking in your gear (including skates) in one bag, another for your clothes and such.
Another tip: Get a stick bag to protect your lumber - especially if you have friction tape on the blade and/or use composites. If it’s a wood stick, see about getting a new stick upon arrival, as for domestic flights, because even 1 stick can be considered your one check-in item. Think about it is it really worth paying an extra 50$ for a 30$ Sherwood?
no you cant take them on the plane you have to check the bag with the skates.
Ice skates are not on the list of banned items for carry on luggage (www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/prohibited/permitted-prohibited-items.shtm) but they are also not on the list of items that are specifically allowed. If the skates are sharp enough to be useful, any TSA agent can say “it is sharp enough to be a weapon”. I know (from other forums) that it has happened to speed skaters with custom skates.
For high end speed skates, an option is to remove the blade from the boots so that the boots (which would be difficult to replace quickly) can be in the carry on baggage where they are safe.
My friends and I have it easy, we use inline skates that we can carry on. No one that I know will put them in baggage when flying to an event because of the risk of loss for the weekend that we will be there to skate.
Can your blades be separated from your boots?
How would your trip be affected if you didn’t have your skates for a few days? (are you going to be competing or are the skates for fun while there?)
There is no problem with putting them in the checked luggage that goes in the luggage compartment under the plane.
You need (go to the TSA page I listed in the first paragraph) to cover the blades to protect any inspector that reaches into the blade. You can probably just tie or tape your normal blade protectors on so that they don’t come off easily.
The risk to that method is that checked luggage has a chance (getting less all the time) of getting to the wrong city. If you are on a direct flight, that risk is reduced a lot since it will go on the plane you get on. If your flight requires changing planes, especially to a different airline, the risk goes up.
Another alternative is to ship the skates via a method where they can be tracked to your destination.
