How do I get the “basement smell” out of my luggage?

Karlee asked:

I had my luggage pieces in my basement probably for six months. Well they started to smell “moist” and a but like mildew. I brought them upstairs and sprayed them with Febreeze numerous times and lined them with drier sheets. I’ve had them upstairs now for a good year, and they still smell. HELP!
Is activated charcoal the same as activated carbon? And can I get this at a hardware store or Lowe’s?

Go on line and order some activated charcoal, place some in a pie tin or something similar, and place a container in each piece of luggage and then close the lid. Should work after a couple of days. Repeat if necessary. clayton

Take the luggage outside, open the luggage, and leave the luggage in the sun for a day or two.

This will get rid of the smell. This airs the luggage out and the sun helps to kill bacteria and mildews that may be in the luggage. Leslie S

try mixing the following into a spray bottle: 1/2 c vinegar + 10-20 drops essential oils+ H2O fill
i would try oils like lavender, clove, cedar wood or any you like. feel free to mix and match
spray this on your luggage and allow to air dry in ventilated area, preferably with sunshine.
at first you will smell the vinegar, but that will fade as it dries. it will also take the “basement smell” with it. there should be a light fragrance of your essential oils in it’s place.
feel free to use this mixture for all your febreeze needs. honeypants

I would suggest to use tea tree oil. Mix 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil to 2 cups of water into a spray bottle. Spray it on the luggage inside out. Leave the solution to stand without rinsing. Leave the luggage widely open to air dry. Sakura Baby
