How large can your luggage be in an Amtrak train?
mavrifantasia asked:
Hey guys I am going for studies in the US and I wondered how large your luggage in an Amtrak train can be if the specific train ride does not offer luggage check-in
@LORI does this extend to backpacks or can I carry one on me?

You are allowed to carry on two bags. Each bag must be smaller than 28″ x 22″ x 14″ and weigh less than 50 pounds.
The exception is the Pacific Surfliner train- if you take that route then maximum bag dimensions are 28″x22″x11″.
See the link for more information.
edit*** Unless the train is very crowded they do not generally enforce the limits so long as your bags are reasonable in size. They may need to fit into a specific area or compartment, but beyond that they don’t care if you’re slightly over somehow.
*edit again* Hi a backpack is not counted as one of your two bags, so long as it is not unusually large like a hikers pack.
A normal size backpack like what you would bring to school is considered a “personal item”. The limit is two bags plus personal item such as purse, laptop bag or backpack. You may have to put it on your lap or the floor by your feet if the train is full. LORI
LOL Serious, I am a frequent rider, I take a backpack with me. I see people bringing as much as they want. 4 to 5 large suitcases. They dont enforce the rules about luggage Mag
