If a bag is found at a terminal, how long will most airlines keep it in lost and found, or will they destroy it immediately?

They search for ID and if none is found in a month, and no claim, they send it to be sold down South. So it pays to put your ID inside as wella s out.

there is no set rule — for all airlines all together. it depends on the city and it depends on the carrier –i.e. the name of the airline. you will have to fax/e-mail them and request the specifics — direct and make it in writing…and accept only the information when in writing and signed by an officer. good luck — if you lost one.
    ps. nothing gets destroyed…to my
knowledge…it depends again on the airline.

Store it?? You mean after they go through it and take out the good stuff? I think they keep it for 6 mos. or a year….quite awhile, but if it’s not returned in the first 48 hours you can pretty much forget about ever seeing it again.

They would keep it as long as they have the space. If the person who lost the bag realize this and have information saying that it is their bag, then either the airlines would contact them or the person themselves could call the lost and found so that they can retrieve it. There are some cases where they would have it in alphabetical order or, they would have a tag on it from where the bag(s) came from, like either the plane number or from what destination.
But, after a long period of time, if no information is found and the person who lost it never ask for it, they actually have a store in Alabama that specializes in re-selling those merchandise. I forgot exactly where in Alabama, I do know that Dave Letterman found out about it and actually sent a crew down there to talk to the owner of the store. “Lost Airplane Merchandise”, I think, is the name of the store. They did have a lot of stuff.
You should Google “lost luggage” or “airport lost and found”. You may get a link to there.
