Is it safe for aerosol cans (ie deodorant) to be put in your luggage in the hold of a plane?

In the past, before restrictions, I’ve put them in my hand luggage but obviously can’t do that now.

Yes. I’ve never had any trouble.
I would be cautious in doing so - make sure to pack it so that there will be as little pressure as possible upon the can. Try packing it between clothes so that it doesn’t get jostled, and make sure your suitcase is fairly sturdy.
There are generally no problems, as the cans are designed for a much higher pressure variant. That said, I recommend packing them in a ziplock bag, just in case turbulance or other impact knocks the cap off and then presses the nozzle (always fun with shaving cream)
