Flying Air India today and would feel more comfortable locking the luggage that I check in, but I am not sure whether this is allowed.

Please answer with a link to some site showing that yes or no this is allowed.

i know you are not allowed to lock your luggage traveling to USA, so my guess it would be that you are not allowed to do it other way around. if they want to check your luggage after check in, lock would not help!

You can lock the luggage, but it should be a TSA approved lock (otherwise the lock may be cut off if they need to inspect anything inside).

    Use zip ties, take extras.

Locking the baggage to be checked in while travelling from U.S. is not allowed.

I have travelled many times from U.S.to India. Every time when I travel, I open the locks of the baggage and hand over the locks to the security staff to lock the baggage after security check and they have been obliging.
