luggage problem
hippo asked:

I am traveling from Vancouver to Calcutta. I fly on Cathay Pacific from Vancouver to Singapore and then I have a connecting flight from Singapore to Calcutta on Singapore airlines. The two tickets for the two segments are separately bought. My question is will Cathay transfer my checked baggage to Singapore airlines in Singapore so that my luggage arrives with me in Calcutta. So far I know these two airlines do not have any transfer luggage agreement. Also, I will not go out of the Singapore airport because I do not have a Singapore visa. My travel agent is telling me that this won’t be a problem. Do you think this will create a problem for my luggage? Will Cathay generally transfer my bags to Singapore airlines? I am confused. I have to buy the tickets and any help will be appreciated. If Cathay does not transfer my luggage in Singapore then I will arrive Calcutta, but my luggage won’t :-(.

Please help!

it is not uncommon for lussage to be transfered between 2 different airlines. BUT if you have (for example) a 60 minute layover and your first flight comes in 30 minutes late, your bags might not make the transfer. dourdan

Since the segments are separately bought, and Cathay and Singapore do not usually have a “baggage interline” agreement, it is unlikely that the one airline will transfer the other’s baggage all the way through to your destination. This shouldn’t be an issue though, as in many countries, you will need to claim your bags at your first stop in that country, so that you can clear Immigration and Customs before continuing on. So when you stop in Singapore you will need to pick up your bags from Cathay anyway, and use the In Transit lane through Customs and Immigration, then drop your bags back at the Singapore bag drop. You should easily be able to do all of this without having to leave security although you (and all other transit passengers) will need to go through a shorter security inspection before proceeding to your next flight.

So it really doesn’t matter if the two airlines will forward bags for eachother since you have to pick them up in Singapore anyway. dcgirl
