Customs at JFK. Do I have to pick my luggage if I have connecting flight?

I am flying from Britain to America soon, and will be flying to Philadelphia and then getting on another plane to fly to another airport in America. Do I need to collect my luggage when I land in Philadelphia, or will it be transported to the connecting flight for me? It is all booked under 1 ticket.

If I decide not to board a connecting flight at the end of my trip is there a way to get my checked luggage?
