How do you store luggage on top of your car?

We are going on a road trip with 5 of our friends in a few days. We have a jeep commander that is a 7 passenger, but with the back seats being used there is ZERO room for luggage. How do we store stuff up on top safely without having to buy a luggage carrier? We have luggage rails.
