Please help! Luggage transfer problem between Cathay pacific and Singapore airlines in Singapore?

I am traveling from Vancouver to Calcutta. I fly on Cathay Pacific from Vancouver to Singapore and then I have a connecting flight from Singapore to Calcutta on Singapore airlines. The two tickets for the two segments are separately bought. My question is will Cathay transfer my checked baggage to Singapore airlines in Singapore so that my luggage arrives with me in Calcutta. So far I know these two airlines do not have any transfer luggage agreement. Also, I will not go out of the Singapore airport because I do not have a Singapore visa. My travel agent is telling me that this won’t be a problem. Do you think this will create a problem for my luggage? Will Cathay generally transfer my bags to Singapore airlines? I am confused. I have to buy the tickets and any help will be appreciated. If Cathay does not transfer my luggage in Singapore then I will arrive Calcutta, but my luggage won’t :-(.
