What are the rules for luggage on an airplane?
Kristy asked:
So I am traveling on Southwest Airlines, and this is the first time I have ever been on an airplane. That being said I don’t know what you can not bring. First there used to be a thing about liquids, so can i bring my shampoo and contact solution? Then I want to bring my laptop, are there rules to that? and finally i want to bring my purse onto the plane, which would have my cell phone, any rules on that? Thanks in advance.

If you are carrying any liquids on the plane with you as a carry-on, they need to be travel size, and need to fit in a 7″ x 8″ Ziploc bag. My suggestion is to just put it in the front of your suitcase or the bag that you are checking in, therefore you wouldn’t have such a hard time at the security gate. You can bring your laptop on the plane, just make sure you have a carrying case for it. When going through the security gate at the airport, you will have to take out the laptop and put it in the bin to go through the scanning machine, along with all of your other carry-ons (purse, belt, shoes, cell phone, jacket if wearing any). Your laptop has to be turned off when the flight is departing until airborne when the flight attendants say that it is safe to use the electronic devices. You can bring your purse & cell phone. The cell phone almost has the same rules as the laptop when on flight deck. It needs to be turned off during the duration of the flight or on airplane mode.
You can bring one piece of luggage and a “personal item” which is a purse, briefcase or backpack.
You can bring 3.4oz (100ml) on, but the TSA is inconsistent with how they advertise that number so if you are bringing anything over 3oz you should bring a print-out of the TSA regulation on liquids. All your liquids need to be in a plastic ziploc bag.
You will need to take your laptop out, unless it’s in one of the new tight cases…think like a wetsuit for a computer. No big deal.
You have to turn off your cell phone when they close the door on the plane and you can turn it back on after landing when they are taxiing to the terminal.
