What happens with my luggage an me during a stopover at Singapore airport?
Hiya
Can someone help calm my nerves?! I am flying to Australia on the 22nd March alone, I am a 21 year old female and am feeling pretty scared.
My flight lands in Singapore and I then have a 12 hour stopover, I don’t plan on leaving the airport so – one what will happen to my luggage? Do I need to claim it? And two….what can I do for 12 hours in the airport??
Alix

You do not need to claim it but bring something to do for 12 hours. Since it is a big airport, walk around, shop, take pictures of planes…check to see if the airport has bed rentals/suites
And about being scared, you should be scared about your ride to the airport. These pilots log in thousands of hours just to get a crappy $15,000 pay. J-ville boy
if it is two separate flights, then yes you will have to collect your luggage when you get to singapore, and then you can either keep it for the 12 hours, or check it in to your next flight. or if is the same flight just a break you wont have to collect your luggage as it will still be on the plane. try to find out in advance what will happen with your luggage.
try to find a cheap hotel and get some sleep for the 12 hours, or check in your luggage and go for lunch, do some shopping, or see the sights!
just be mega organised to stop you stressing and if you feel you will need a rest have a hotel all booked and organised so you know what you are doing. having a hotel to rest in is probably a good idea and you can take a shower and freshen up before your next flight. many airports have rest rooms and stuff similar to book, but they are usually quite expensive so search the net and download maps and stuff in advance. dont let stressing out about things that you can organise well in advance ruin your exciting trip! sneakypeak900
If you bought your ticket in one transaction, then the airline will transfer it onto the connecting flight so you do not have to pick it up and then check it in again.
Singapore’s Changi International does have shops that are open 24 hours but 12 hours in an airport is an extremely long time. Some airlines will actually pay you to stay at a hotel near the airport. You can ask your airline if they will put you in a room to rest. Worst case is they say no. potatochip
Alix,
I log about 150,000 miles per year, all of it international. The answers you got are mostly correct, but sort of confusing.
Do you have to pick up your luggage in Singapore? The answer is no, unless you plan on clearing immigration and customs and enter the city. In fact, unless you clear immigration your cannot collect your bags. They will be automatically sent on to Australia on the same flight. If you are worried, ask the agent at the check in counter before your first leg, “Are my bags checked through to Sydney?”
What do you do for 12 hours? If you like to shop, time will fly by. Singapore has one of the biggest shopping plaza I have seen in 20 years of international travel. I do not suggest leaving the airport for site seeing. 12 hours is not that long, and Singapore has very few sites to see.
In addition to hotel rooms by the hour, you may also be able to by a one-day membership at the airline’s club room. They provide comfortable seating, quited areas for sleeping, and plenty of free snacks. It may cost up to $50.00 for a day pass.
Bring a book (or 2) and get one of those inflatable pillows so you can rest. If you are flying coach, you will need all the rest you can get.
Finally, as far as your comfort and safety, there is no better airport to have a long layover than Singapore. It is extremely safe and everyone speaks English.
Have a fun journey. Doug
I transit in Singapore a lot. For a 12 hour layover, I would go get some sleep at the hotel. The transit hotel rents rooms by several blocks of hours. Often young people just sleep on the sofas in front of the big screen TV. There is also a pay-in lounge. Changi is very transit friendly.
As for luggage, most likely you will not need to claim your luggage even if the flights are on different airlines, as most airlines have luggage transfer agreements. You should confirm this by calling the airline.
I recommend the upstairs food court. There’s a place that serves good curry and nonya laksa. Dan
When you check in ask where the bags are going to - if you are on a connecting flight then the bag will go straight through to your destination.
Now at Changi there is a bus tour you can go on that departs from INSIDE the airport (you dont actually go through immigration - you get on a bus which you are not permitted to leave and they do a driving tour around the city - this takes around 2-3 hours. There is also a hotel inside which you can book for 4 hour stays. There is also an “oasis” upstairs near Emarites lounge I think - that you can book in for 2-4 hours that has showers facilities, massage, coffee/tea, small selection of food - it is a “QANTAS -like” lounge that anyone can go to but you have to pay a fee. Its a good way to waste some time. There also used to be a cinema but I cant remember if that is still there. skc
