What is the best piece of luggage for a single guy to carry while traveling to Europe?

I’m looking to visit multiple countries, staying in hostels, trying to minimize fees at the airport and looking to walk around with ease with it.

I suppose if I fly EasyJet or RyanAir, I should have only a carry-on?

In short, I’m clueless about this. I wouldn’t say that I’m backpacking, but maybe I really am. My itinerary so far is Detroit to Edinburgh to London to Paris to Switzerland, by bus, train and plane. What are my options.

You definitely want a big backpack. In many cases you can carry them on, and since you’ll be moving around a lot you’ll want something that’s easy to carry around: a backpack.

You don’t want something with wheels because you’ll look like a tourist and average people hate it when someone is wheeling a bag behind them. In hostels everyone has backpacks.

And since you’ll be carrying it around on your back, you’ll want to pack light which should really be one of your main goals.

you definitely need something that qualifies as carry-on cabin baggage because so many of the cheaper airlines charge you so much extra for checking in bags … and I’d certainly say you need something that has some wheels so that you don’t have to carry it all the time … although a back-pack sounds logical I wouldn’t say it would be my first choice because back-packs don’t neatly fit cabin baggage dimensions … I have seen sort of kit bags with wheels at one end that might suit … but to be honest, I’ve got a little wheelie suitcase that perfectly fits cabin baggage dimensions for all the airlines I’ve flown on and which carries enough clothes, and that would certainly be my recommendation for you … all suitcase manufacturers make ones this size and I would say go for a reasonably good quality one that will stand up to the wear and tear

I think when you’re travelling around, practicality wins out over style every time, and I wouldn’t worry about whether other people in hostels have back-packs

just be careful about buying gifts, make sure they’re very small … and be warned that if you have carry-on baggage only most airlines will only allow one piece of luggage … I even have to put my handbag inside the suitcase carina
