Let me just say I am not planning on doing this myself, I am purely curious as surely the person could not be committing an offence at the point of departure?

You cannot take a gun on a plane immaterial of the point of departure and arrival
What should happen is that you have to declare the gun and show it isn’t loaded then whoever inspected it would prevent you from taking it to UK (in this example)
you’d have to declare it, and then ud need to give a reason as to why u are taking it over to the other country
if u do not have permission to have it in the other country it will be confiscated and if not declared you’ll prob be arrested
it is illegal to have firearms or any weapons on a plane no matter what country they are in or if they have a licence for the gun
1) intent does not negate offense
2) act illegal taking it on plane
3) odds of getting it on plane in luggage - just about zero.
As far as I am aware, in order to carry a weapon on an aeroplane you have to have legal clearance (some form or other), and it must be declared at customs, prior to boarding. No ammunition can be carried on board (this must be in checked in luggage) and this also must be certified.

You have to check the gun - it cannot be taken on as hand luggage!
I believe they would have it confiscated and charged, and maybe even deported once they land.
The onus is on the traveler to make sure they are not carrying anything not permitted in the country into which they are arriving.
I take it you mean in the luggage in the hold and not hand luggage!

The point being ‘why would you bring a gun into the UK knowing there are strict laws in place’!

Considering that it is illegal to take a gun on a plane that person probably would get into trouble. It has been stated it is up to you to know the laws ect on these kind of things in the country you are traveling to before you travel. You would have to declare it and have documentation , permission to bring the gun into another country. In all reality they would probably deny it and you would end up under investigation ad loose your gun.
He must be a stupid person to try this what with all the technology they have now at airports, if he was shocked to be pulled to one side he must be daft. Unless he was with the police/CIA for example but they must of been warned that he would be bording with it if he was with a dangerous prisioner.
Well, you’re allowed to own a gun in America (provided you have the permit etc.) but even there you cannot take your gun on board in your hand luggage…..
For one thing, it is not legal for anyone in the US to carry a gun on a plane unless they are authorized by law. That excludes everyone except some law enforcement, such as US Marshals (City or state police are NOT authorized). If you tried to cross security with a gun in the US, even if you had a CW permit for it, you would be immediately arrested and your weapon confiscated.
They would have it confiscated at their point of arrival if it’s detected.
Same thing happens in the states all the time. Guys travel (in their luggage that’s checked) with their perfectly legal handgun to a state where it’s not, and when they go to leave after their trip they’re arrested. 700 times at the NYC airports last year alone. Ridiculous laws.
You need to call in advance and tell the airline you need to transport a firearm. There are certain proceedures in place to do so, and ammo can not be transported with. ( no ammo )
P.S. Make sure the weapons is not loaded when you bring it to the airport.

In domestic travel certain nations like the USA allow it since it falls under their laws and not another country’s

Thankfully possession of guns is illegal in the UK so it would be confiscated and you would be charged with being in possession of an illegal firearm for which there is the possibility of a jail sentence
It is also illegal to board a plane in all western countries with a firearm in your hand luggage
First, before you boards a flight, you are asked if you are carrying any weapon. Your luggage is also checked to make sure there is no weapon in it.
Second, most flights make it clear to passengers that such weapons are not accepted on the flight or in the luggage.
Third, Before landing, the immigration service of the visiting country always ask questions to know if you are carrying weapons, drugs, money etc.
Fouth, there is no ignorance before the law. If someone did that and entered a country where guns are illegal, he will be charged as a criminal and surely will face the heavy hand of the law.
You would be arrested for a start and the gun seized ignorance of the law is no excuse though if your story was believed you may not be charged.
It wouldn’t work in your hypothetical case, but you can travel on UK flights with guns checked in the hold provided you have the paperwork and necessary cases. I know several who have taken their rifles to Africa for hunting.

guns can be carried in checked luggage under certain conditions, but if you try to enter a country carrying something that is prohibited in that country, whether it be dope or guns or pornography, then at a minimum the stuff is confiscated and at a maximum it is confiscated and then you go to prison for smuggling contraband.
Quite simply it is improbable that you could even board a plane with the gun.
In order to board a plane with a gun you need permits on both ends, and a damn good reason to be traveling with a gun.
