Where can I put my luggage on National Express East Coast trains?

There always used to be luggage racks at the end of the carriages, but when I travelled on NXEC a couple of weeks ago, they seem to have beem removed and notices affuxed in the vestibules warning against luggage being left. I personally wouldn’t leave anything in the vestibules unattended anyway. Is the larger piece too large to go on the overhead shelf?
