Who wants to do a real-life optimization calculus problem for me?

I’m a dork, and I want to figure out the optimum dimensions for a piece of luggage I can check on an airplane. The airline I’m flying on says I can have a maximum total length, width, and height of 62 inches. What would be the dimensions that would yield the maximum volume?

FYI, this is not a homework problem, this is for real life applications. I could do the calculus myself, but I’m a little rusty and it would be a struggle. I’m hoping some math genius has some free time on hand.

  1. YahooUser says:

It’s a cube 62/3 inches on the side. See if it fits under the seat or in the overhead compartment. YahooUser

You are missing a constraint. Find out the maximum height that will fit in the overhead compartment. You want to maximize the luggage size, but you don’t want to jeopardize the bag not fitting in the overhead compartment. Maxing out the luggage size would make a cube 62/3″, but that’s not really ideal for travel. John
