Would there be any problem if I had a hollowed out “book safe” in my luggage?

luggage problem
j j asked:

I’m flying from Chicago to London and I will be checking my bag. Would there be any problem if I had a hollowed out “book safe” in my luggage?
Here’s what a book safe is: http://keetsa.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/secret_book_box.jpg
Would it attract attention?
Inside the book I’m going to have little bottles of lube and condoms
I want to put all the stuff in and wrap it up nicely in christmas paper so I don’t want to have to take it out. I especially don’t want there to be a problem with my checked bag because then they won’t put it on the plane…

So anyway, do I have anything to worry about?
hahaha, no I’m not embarrassed about them, the book safe is a gift for my boyfriend. I wanted to wrap it up at home so i didn’t have to worry about wrapping it after I had arrived in London.

at least there will be lube for your body cavity search, when they take you into that little room MikeA

The TSA actually recommends that you don’t wrap anything because of the likelihood that they will have to open it if they can’t tell what’s in it. The x-ray machines can probably see that you have a book safe with objects inside it and will probably select your bag for a search. As lube and condoms (and book safes) are not illegal, you should not expect that your bags won’t be put on the plane. Both of my checked bags were searched the last time I flew, yet they were both waiting for me at my destination.

Are you just embarrassed about traveling with lube and condoms? It’s not that big a deal, people travel with crazy sex toys all the time, lube and condoms is nothing; the TSA agents have seen it all before. Even if you try to hide them, they will be visible on the x-ray machine, as well as if/when your bag is searched–and then the agents will be TOUCHING your lube and condoms, not just looking at them on a monitor. I would say putting them in a book safe and then packing them pretty much guarantees that your bag will be searched (again, this won’t be a problem unless you have illegal items in your bag). Probably not an issue. If they x-ray your checked bag, they will see those items inside the book - I don’t know if they will be able to tell that they are actually within the book, or might think they are just on top of it - doesn’t really matter anyway, I think.

You can’t take wrapped present through the carry-on screening, but in checked luggage, they won’t know it is wrapped unless they have some reason to open your bag, or it gets picked for a random inspection. In any case, the worst I would expect is that they unwrap it.

    Have fun! Roger K
